The Calamitous Clinton Cough Controversy

I knew there was a witty headline out there somewhere and thanks to Rex Huppke of the Chicago Tribune, I have the perfect one. Seriously, read the piece. It’s funny.

Lets talk about health. And the presidency.  And the media. I’ll show you mine if you show me yours: BP at last check was 100/60, cholesterol slightly high at 220, height 5’ 4¾ “ (but don’t tell the DMV since my license says 5’5”).

Clinton is on her deathbed if the recent spate of gossip is to be believed. She coughs a lot, causes an “internet meltdown” by needing help up stairs, and has a handler carry a Diazepam syringe in case she gets, you know, hysterical.

Once again, the cultural stereotype reigns supreme: the strapping, assertive man and the shrinking, frail woman who may break if she shouts too hard. I’m disappointed in this standard cliché and the attention it’s been given by the media. Focusing on the Trump-Clinton health squabble draws attention from real issues and reduces the presidential election to a schoolyard brawl.

The former campaign worker in me says, “But these stories produce clicks and boost open rates.”

It’s true.

But I’m hoping for something better.
